An aerial sweep of the sea ice that fills McMurdo Sound reveals a few small, snow-streaked islands. And then there are the telephone poles, vehicle trailer and Jamesway building sitting half-buried in snow. How the McMurdo Station ice pier ended up there is an easy question to answer. The more difficult problem is getting all that stuff off the ice-locked pier before it floats out to sea.
